Quality and quantity of visitor traffic is the currency of any successful website. So, a key step in monetizing a blog or a website is to decide a website traffic optimization strategy.
There are two category of activities involved in optimizing website traffic – activities related to website promotion and subsequent activities related to traffic and site management.
- Promotion of website content via activity streams like Twitter, Facebook, FriendFeed, Techmeme, Digg.
- Syndication of site content using Feedburner, Brightcove, YouTube, NetVibes and other RSS, social media or widget sites.
- Search engine promotion involving both organic using SEO techniques and paid search marketing.
- As the site grows it needs to be benchmarked against competition using tools like Compete and Quantcast and checked for digital marketing readiness from time-to-time using tools like WebsiteGrader.
- Continue to monitor and optimize the site or blog around parameters like search indexing (Webmaster tools), ad revenues (Web Analytics tools), site performance (performance monitoring tools like mon.itor.us), etc.
- Analyze viewer behaviour using tools like Google Analytics, social activity using social media monitoring tools like Nielsen Buzzmetrics, and content performance using web or feed analytics.
